"A musical take on the Bard offers the spirit of community,
a lesson in gender identity and an infectious good time."

A Socially Distanced Musical Teaser
Produced in the safety of our homes!
How do you make a musical in 40 different homes? We asked ourselves this very question when many of us were really struggling to adjust to remote school and life in Quarantimes. So we we decided to reduce our project to a highlight real from the longer play that we sincerely hope to come back to next season. Actors recorded music and movement with Alejandro and Krista while technicians created different animations with David and Keithlyn. Jo played producer and stage manager on this one while we all learned new technology and different kinds of storytelling. More importantly we got to see each other at least once a week and continue working on our theatre skills. Below you can peek in on what we made and how we made it! All hail the puppets! We hope Shakespeare would love this!
While we hope to fully stage this play production in the 2020-2021 academic year,
we were so grateful to be able to build this teaser, with our graduating B'DAT seniors
Ashanti Johnson, Weston Delehanty, Walker Dove, Greg Austin, Deborah Babalola,
Lola Berger and Ray Craig , who worked on this Quarantimes project with us.

From the Authors Kwame Kwei-Armah and Shaina Taub:
"Twelfth Night is a new American musical originally created for Public Works, a radically inclusive program at the Public Theatre in New York City that believe ‘Culture belongs to everyone’…

The action of the play takes place now and always in a mythical city surrounded by water called Illyria. Illyria is here, there and everywhere. No one is an expert in our Illyria. Our Illyria is not set in any one specific era or locale, rather an imagined city where all cultures are welcome. Our Illyria is filled with different musical styles, ranging from – New Orleans jazz to Motown soul to Broadway showtune to 80s pop – in order to create as inclusive a world as possible."
